Separated by 3,720 Miles — and I Bump into Him Because of a Mistake!
When does this happen? No really? WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN?!!
As some of you may know, I have been trying to get this one guy to do a book blurb (a short comment for the cover) for Security Through Absurdity — Book Two: Bubbles Will Pop. I ONLY WANT THIS ONE GUY. He’s not a famous writer. He’s just a guy that made a website and I want HIM associated with this book. I even dreamed about the cover blurb that he would write. But alas, he doesn’t return my emails and the number he has listed on the whois registry is not valid – *figures.
Anyhow – I went to the BOSTON BOOK FESTIVAL. It was very nice. Really nice. A super sunny, blue sky day. Warm sweater weather. I’m minding my own business trying to get in to see a publishing agent that I had targeted on my “Stalker List”. Unfortunately, I end up at the wrong venue to hear her speak. I thought she was listed as being at Old South Church.
So I’m sorta moping out of the building debating if I want to walk all the way to the building she is really at a few blocks away … when who walks by?
THE GUY THAT I WANT TO WRITE MY BOOK BLURB!! He’s walking toward me. Walking toward Old South Church! The very place that I had mistakenly gone to, to see an agent who wasn’t there.
I stopped him – and he knew who I was immediately- even before I said my name. He said he was really sorry that he had been avoiding me. I said I had an inkling as to why and that I understood. We started talking. He lives in SEATTLE, of all places! 3,720 miles away and is only in Boston for the weekend. I could not believe the odds of just randomly bumping into this guy from Seattle on the sidewalk in the middle of Boston. And I just started crying. Not weeping. But I couldn’t help it. It was overwhelming. I mean I was so happy but what the heck man! You’ve got to be kidding me! He hugged me. We talked for a long time, as if we had known each other, because in a way we do. We’ve experienced a lot of the same things.
I gave him my first book – the book that I was going to give to the agent. And he asked me to autograph it. I just printed out “NO WAY!!!” and signed my name.
He may or may not do the blurb. And I understand why. If he doesn’t at least I’ll have had that experience. I will never forget the overwhelming sensation of … I don’t know what exactly it’s called. Synchronicity? Serendipity? All I know is that it’s the way it’s supposed to be. We hugged good bye and I have been in a daze ever since.
Seriously? WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN?!
UPDATE: He just emailed to let me know that he is reading the book I gave him, Book One: LITTLE YELLOW STICKIES, and loves it! And more importantly that he has agreed to write a blurb for Book Two: BUBBLES WILL POP. That’s the book I dreamed about seeing his blurb on the cover! He requested that his little comment not be on the cover though. So when the book is finally released, look on the very first page. You’ll see who this man is and might be able to guess, after reading the book, why I thought he was so important to track down.
